Cyclone Hudhud’s impact: South Central Railway working overtime to restore services to Visakhapatnam

HYDERABAD: With over 200 metres of railway line between Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam destroyed under Cyclone Hudhud's impact, senior South Central Railway (SCR) officials said they are working overtime to restore trains services to Vizag city.

SCR officials said night patrolmen noticed the grave situation near Yelamanchili along the rail route late on Sunday and immediately informed the Vijayawada division.


"They were sent as a precautionary measure to prevent untoward incidents because of the cyclone. The railway line is still affected and we are trying hard to restore it soon," said K Sambasiva Rao, SCR spokesman. "We are hopeful of restoring services by Tuesday evening," he said. But, officials said the route from Samalkot to Visakhapatnam will remain inoperable for sometime now.


A team headed by SCR chief engineer from Tuni in East Godavari district was deployed at the spot along with the Vijayawada divisional railway manager, he added.


Anticipating erosion at railway tracks, SCR officials said they had stored track restoration material at different locations on standby. Nine trains carrying sand, boulders, quarry dust, among other materials, were dispatched from Vijayawada, Secunderabad, Guntur and Guntakal divisions. Seven poclainers and contract labourers are on the track restoration job, while another 280 personnel from Gudur and Vijayawada, have been sent to the site.


Officials said that SCR general manager PK Srivastava spoke to Andhra Pradesh chief secretary IYR Krishna Rao on Monday and sought the state's assistance and cooperation in completing the work at Elamanchili.


The SCR has announced that it would ply two trains to help stranded passengers and ferry them upto Tuni.


A train from Hyderabad to Kakinada was scheduled to leave at 5.15 am and another from Tirupati to Tuni at 8.50 am. The railways are disseminating information of schedules on its website as well as on its Facebook page.
