The support came a day after the Kerala Congress unit expressed its displeasure against Tharoor's gushing praise for the PM, asking the central leadership to decide on action against the diplomat-turned-MP. Singh's remark is significant because he himself had come out thanking Modi for the Centre's prompt action on Kashmir floods. His party colleague Ghulam Nabi Azad was the only other person to thank the PM for flood relief measures even as Congress said the Centre could have done much more.
Striking a different note on the Tharoor issue, Congress spokesman Anand Sharma said, "Digvijaya speaks for himself. Tharoor speaks for himself."

Congress is a divided house on how it should deal with Modi who has emerged as formidable rival after he dislodged the party from power and reduced it to a meager 44 MPs. While a section feels the party should not come across as churlish by opposing everything he does, there are others who feel that a hardline is must to enthuse the cadre and keep the government under check. Tharoor himself has argued that his praise for clean-India campaign was a support for a cause and not a vote of confidence for Modi.
While there is unease in Congress over Tharoor's warmth towards the rival, the party is unlikely to rush into taking action against the Kerala MP.
