Bombay HC summons Maharashtra chief secretary

MUMBAI: Bombay High Court summoned Maharashtra chief secretary at around 5.30pm as he failed to remain present in response to a notice for contempt of court.

On September 15, the court had issued the contempt notice to the chief secretary after noting that the government has failed to disburse compensation amount to the next of kin of four men who were killed in the 13/7 blasts despite their August 12 direction.

The collector (Thane) was directed to pay Rs 3 lakh each under a Central scheme to the legal hiers by 5pm on September 17. On July 13, 2011, three bombs exploded at Opera House, Zaveri Bazar and a bus stop in Dadar, claiming 27 lives.

Petitioner Prakash Sheth's advocate Rahul Kadam informed a division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Girish Kulkarni that the families of the four victims have received the money.

The judges asked what was the State government's response to their query in the order on whether similarly placed persons have received compensation. They were miffed when they were informed that the government has not filed its affidavit in reply. The judges also noted that the chief secretary has not appeared despite contempt notice issued to him. "He is not present. Tell him to appear in court at 5.30 pm," said Justice Oka.
