Andhra Pradesh hikes ex gratia payment to Hudhud survivors; offers assistance for crop loss

HYDERABAD: While still grappling to work out compensation for residents of Visakhapatnam who were hit hard by Cyclone Hudhud, the Andhra Pradesh government on Monday announced liberal assistance for those who lost their crops, as well as ex gratia to the families of those who died due to the natural disaster that has in all affected five coastal districts of the state. The new scale of assistance came into force from Sunday.

As per the new instructions announced by the revenue department (disaster management), the ex gratia for the families of the deceased has been increased from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh while those who lost limb or eye would get Rs one lakh.


Those grievously injured would get Rs 50,000 if requiring hospitalization for more than a week, and Rs 15,000 if the hospitalization is less than a week.


In all, banana crop on 1,050 hectares, papaya on 142 hectares, coconut on 4,500 hectares, mango on 7,550 hectares, vegetables on 4,500 hectares and horticulture crops on 12,500 hectares were destroyed by Hudhud.


AP government increased the input subsidy for paddy, groundnut, cotton, sugarcane, chillies, vegetables, onion, flowers, papaya and watermelon from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per hectare. Farmers cultivating pulses, sunflower, soyabean, wheat, ajwain and linseed will get Rs 10,000 per hectare as against Rs 6,250.


For maize, the input subsidy has been raised to Rs 12,500 from Rs 8,333. Farmers who lost mango, citrus, cashewnut, sapota, guava, pomegranate, etc., are to get Rs 20,000 instead of Rs 15,000 per hectare. Compensation for each coconut tree lost has been increased from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000. Families who lost clothing and utensils would get Rs 2,000 each and 25 kg rice, 5 litres of kerosene, 2 kg dal, 1 litre palm oil, 0.5 kg chilli powder, 0.5 kg salt, 1 kg sugar, 3 kg potato and 2 kg onion.


For the families who lost milch animals, the government will give an assistance of Rs 20,000 per buffalo, cow, camel, etc., subject to a ceiling of assistance for five animals per household.


For the loss of calf or donkey or pony, the owner is to get Rs 10,000. Fishermen would also get enhanced ex gratia for the damage to their boats motorboats and autos.


Parakala Prabhakar, advisor, communications said: Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to treat the Hudhud devastation a national disaster and release Rs 2,000 crore immediately for relief operationsFor health, an emergency team led by IAS officers L V Subramanyam and Manmohan Singh are to monitor the efforts while Sanjay Jaju will monitor sanitation measures and S P Tucker will oversee restoration works on power lines."


"100 tonnes of food has already been distributed. Fifty tonnes of food each from Vijayawada and Rajahmundry are being taken to Vizag," Parakala said.
