MOM makes friends in outer space

HYDERABAD: What is an Explorer. Loves science, photography and long cruises?

MOM's the word.

India's Mars Orbiter Mission which got into the Martian orbit on September 24, it appears, is having a whale of a time with other Mars missions, if their tweets (actually on their behalf) are anything to go by.

On Friday, @MarsOrbiter had a good word for @NASAVoyager. The Indian Mars Orbiter Mission' (MOM) Mangalyaan tweeted: "The bravest of us all @NASAVoyager , having ventured out the farthest. We're here for you."

A lovely bonhomie is taking place in outer space in the Mars orbit. When MOM arrived in the Mars orbit, the European Space Agency's @esaoperations tweeted a picture of the planet.

"Welcome @MarsOrbiter from ESA's Mars Express! Looking forward to exploring #Mars w/you! Here's an arrival day pic,"@esaoperations said. Of course, MOM was happy.

"Wow! Your pic made my day. Excited to have an explorer buddy. @esaoperations ." @MarsOrbiter tweeted in response.

Since it took to Twitter on September 23 when it arrived on the Mars orbit, @MarsOrbiter had 63,000 followers by evening but by 4 pm on Friday, the number went up to 1.12 lakh.

In earlier interactions, MOM engaged its followers with its tweets.

"I'll be back after breakfast. Good ol' sunlight. It's good for your battery," @MarsOrbiter said in interactions with its followers. The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) had lost no time in creating a Twitter account for MOM after it got the first signals that it had got into the Mars orbit on September 24.

"What is red, is a planet and is the focus of my orbit?," MOM asked the first question which was retweeted more than 12,200 times along with a pic. @MarsOrbiter began following three of its fraternity - @MarsCuriosity, @NASAVoyager and @MarsRovers on its Twitter handle but now is following 14.

" Namaste, @MarsOrbiter ! Congratulations to @ISRO and India's first interplanetary mission upon achieving Mars orbit," @MarsCuriosity said on MOM's arrival in the orbit. MOM replied promptly: "Howdy @MarsCuriosity ? Keep in touch. I'll be around."

And by the way @MarsOrbiter which is India's first mission to Mars has introduced itself as "Orbiting the Red Planet since Sep 24, 2014." And the description also says: Explorer. Loves science, photography and long cruises.
