Corporal punishment is defined as the use of physical force towards a child for the purpose of control or correction and as a disciplinary penalty.
Corporal punishment involves hitting children with a hand or an implement. Article 19 of the Committee on the Rights of Child directs states to protect children from 'all forms of physical or mental violence'.
National Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the Ministry of Human Resource Development also prohibit corporal punishments in all schools in the jurisdiction of the state government.
The objectives of this national seminar will be to deliberate on the issue of corporal punishments for children in India, to discuss the existing situations regarding corporal punishments and child rights.
Through this seminar, MSU aims to explore different issues like law, education system, psychological impact in relation to corporal punishments and role of community and media for developing awareness and action oriented approach towards corporal punishments in schools, home and judiciary system.
School teachers and principals, NGOs, UNICEF representatives, higher education department staff, people form Child Rights Commission of India, students and staff of the universities, teachers union, ICPS staff, GCPU staff, education and training institute staff will be able to participate in this seminar.
