Identify land for rehabilitation of Kashmiri migrants, Rajnath tells Omar govt

NEW DELHI: Union home minister Rajnath Singh has asked the Jammu & Kashmir government to identify suitable land in the Kashmir valley for the rehabilitation of Kashmiri migrants.

In a letter to chief minister Omar Abdullah regarding the implementation of rehabilitation package for displaced Kashmiri pandits, Rajnath Singh has suggested that land be identified near the native places they had migrated from. He also advised that land be demarcated keeping in mind the provision of adequate security in its close proximity.

At present there are about 62,000 registered Kashmiri migrant families in the country. They were forced to migrate from the Kashmir valley to Jammu, Delhi and other parts of the country since militancy broke out in the valley in the early nineties.

The home minister is said to have underlined in his letter the Centre's commitment to facilitate the return of the Kashmiri migrants to the Kashmir valley and their proper rehabilitation. A sum of Rs 500 crore was earmarked in the Union Budget 2014-15 for this purpose.
