The state ranked ninth all India in 2011 and 2012 in terms of domestic tourist flow. Now, Gujarat lags behind Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
The state, however, has a share of only 2.4% of the domestic tourist flow in the country and in terms of foreign tourists, Gujarat's share is less than 1%.
Rajasthan, which has a share of 2.6% in domestic tourist flow, attracted 3.03 crore tourists. Of the all-India figure of 114.53 crore domestic tourists, the top 10 states, including Gujarat, attracted 97.27 crore.
In terms of growth in tourist flow, the country recorded an increase of 32% in 2013 as compared to 2011; Gujarat recorded a growth of 30% during the same period.
In 2011, Gujarat attracted 2.10 crore tourists which increased to 2.44 crore in 2012, registering a growth of 15.99%. In 2013, the number increased to 2.74 crore with a growth of 12.29%.
However, the growth in the number of foreign tourists was not impressive. According to officials, in 2011 the number of foreign visitors was 1.66 lakh which increased by 4.88% to 1.74 lakh in 2012. Around two lakh foreign tourists visited Gujarat in 2013.
Surprisingly, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh did not figure among the top 10 states in attracting foreign tourists. Goa, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh were among the top 10 states and far ahead of Gujarat in attracting foreign tourists. The top 10 states have a share of 89.9% of the total 1.79 crore foreign tourists, while the remaining states, including Gujarat, have a share of just 20.13 lakh foreign tourists.
