Karunanidhi slams Centre's move to celebrate Teachers' Day as 'guru utsav'

CHENNAI: DMK chief M Karunanidhi has taken exception to human resource development ministry's plan to celebrate Teachers' Day as 'guru utsav' and alleged that a conspiracy was being hatched to downgrade Tamil language and society by such a move.

"This morning I read a newspaper report that the central government has issued a circular to celebrate Teachers' Day (September 5) as Guru Utsav hereafter. We have been celebrating Teachers' Day for several years. This is an apt example of hatching a conspiracy to downgrade Tamil language and those who made sacrifices for its welfare", he said.

The DMK patriarch, who attended the marriage of the daughter of former assembly secretary M Selvaraj here, noted that the ceremony was held as per Tamil culture and requested everyone to work for the welfare of Tamil and the cause of Tamil society.
