Former UP chief minister Kalyan Singh made Rajasthan governor

NEW DELHI: The NDA government on Tuesday named governors for four states, sending former UP chief minister Kalyan Singh to Rajasthan, Gujarat assembly speaker Vajubhai Vala to Karnataka, former minister of state in Vajpayee government C Vidyasagar Rao to Maharashtra and former BJP Mahila Morcha president Mridula Sinha to Goa.

Sources in the government also told TOI that Kerala governor Shiela Dikshit may resign in a day or two. An indication to this effect was given by her in her meeting with Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Monday.

While the vacancy in Maharashtra arose following the resignation of K Sankaranarayanan after he declined the transfer to Mizoram, Goa fell vacant following the resignation of BV Wanchoo in June. The vacancies in Rajasthan and Katnataka followed completion of tenures of UPA appointees Margaret Alva and HR Bhardwaj respectively.

Kalyan Singh, who was initially reluctant to quit active politics, had recently given his consent for a gubernatorial assignment.

The other three names — Vajubhai Vala, Mridula Sinha and Vidyasagar Rai — have seemingly scored over other probables like Lalji Tandon and VK Malhotra. Sources indicated that Tandon and Malhotra may no longer figure high on the priority list of the government for governorships.

Vidyasagar Rao, who is headed for the poll-bound state of Maharashtra, was minister of state for home in the Vajpayee government. He has represented Karimnagar, Andhra Pradesh, in the 12th and 13th Lok Sabha.

Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala, named for Karnataka, has served several stints as finance minister in the Gujarat government. He was elected speaker of Gujarat assembly in 2013.

Ms Mridula Sinha, who belongs to Bihar, is a former BJP Mahila Morcha president, besides having served as chairperson of Central Board of Social Welfare. She has also authored several Hindi novels.
