New trains, better amenities for UP

LUCKNOW: Sadananda Gowda's maiden Rail Budget rolled out 14 new trains for Uttar Pradesh, besides a slew of measures for passenger amenities and stations uplift.

The key highlight was the high speed trains on Delhi-Kanpur and Delhi-Agra routes, which will cut down the travelling time from five hours to about two to three hours.

To facilitate Internet usage for travellers, railways will provide Wi-Fi facility at A1 and A category stations. The A1 category stations in UP are Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Varanasi and Allahabad, while there are 30 A category stations.

Two new trains — Lucknow and LTT (Mumbai) weekly and Gorakhpur-Mumbai Jansadharan express — will reduce burden passenger rush for Mumbai. Seven new express trains and a passenger train between Gorakhpur and Nautanwa (near Nepal border) will improve rail connectivity in UP. A tourist train from Rameshwaram connecting Bangalore, Chennai, Ayodhya, Varanasi and Haridwar, and a special train featuring life and work of Swami Vivekananda, which could run through Moradabad and Lucknow division, are special services in this year's rail budget.

Plans like onboard house keeping services (OBHS) and mechanized cleaning of railway stations, which were put on hold for major stations like Lucknow and Varanasi for years due to fund crunch, are likely to take off this year. Battery operated vehicles will be available at major stations of UP to facilitate movement of senior citizens and physically challenged passengers. Lucknow Junction, though, already has the facility.

Besides constructing food courts at major stations, an IVRS mechanism would collect feedback from passengers on the quality of food served on-board. There has been rise in complaints against food served on-board and yet contracts of same vendors are being renewed.

Railways has proposed to introduce pre-cooked meals of reputed brands in phases and let passengers order for regional cuisines on-board through e-mails and SMS.

Coin operated Automatic Ticket Vending Machine (ATVM) would add a new dimension to passenger amenities.
