The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Mark Simmonds on Tuesday updated parliament on unpaid parking fines incurred by diplomatic missions including a whopping £74,557 by the high commission of Nigeria.
In 2013, 5662 unpaid parking fines incurred by diplomatic missions in the UK were brought to the attention of the foreign office by councils.
The actual amount of unpaid parking fines is a shocking £541,599.
The Office of the high commissioner for India has an outstanding bill of £2,085 is parking tickets.
Parliament was told that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has held face-to-face meetings with several diplomatic missions about outstanding parking fine debt.
Simmonds said "In addition, in April this year we wrote to diplomatic missions and international organisations concerned giving them the opportunity to either pay their outstanding fines or appeal against them if they considered that the fines had been issued incorrectly".
Subsequent payments (including amounts waived by councils) totalled £197,423.
Simmonds said there remains a total of £344,176 in unpaid fines for 2013.
Among the missions with the largest amount of pending fine is that of Saudi Arabia which owes £30,690, Zambia £22,700, France £6,130. The high commission of Pakistan owes £4,415 in parking fines.
