Congress demands white paper on weeding out files

NEW DELHI: The Congress demanded a white paper on the BJP government's order to weed out old files, citing some reports that some files related to Mahatma Gandhi's assassination were destroyed.

The opposition party rejected home minister Rajnath Singh's statement that out of the 11,000 files destroyed, none belonged to Gandhi's assassination.

"This is planned and organized way to change India's history," Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said, alleging that files relating to events before and after Gandhi's assassination were destroyed to "hide its distant past from the new generation".

Ahmed said an "impartial investigation" is needed to determine what kinds of files were destroyed and at what level this decision was taken.

In same breath, the Congress leader said he was making the demands on the basis of media reports but "since an allegation has been made, the government should clear the doubts".

He said the government has said the files relating to Gandhi's assassination are safe while reports suggest that the files related to the cabinet meeting immediately after Gandhi's assassination at which the then home minister Sardar Patel raised questions on the assassination and his views on banning the RSS have been destroyed.

To a question as to why the UPA government, which was in power for ten years, could not archive these important files, Ahmed said, "A white paper will clear all these things. That is why I am making this demand."
