BJP leader Subramanian Swamy asks for Z-plus security

NEW DELHI: BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has written to the Union home ministry seeking enhanced security cover, preferably Z-plus with CRPF personnel, citing threats "from several quarters".

The letter, received by the ministry around 25-30 days ago, recalls his earlier request to the UPA government for heightened protection in 2011. He had then cited ongoing court matters, including the 2G spectrum scam case in which he had pushed for a probe, as well as certain divisive remarks attributed to him, to demand state protection.

However, though the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is said to have forwarded Swamy's request to the home ministry, no action was taken. With a BJP-led government now in the saddle, Swamy, who recently filed a criminal complaint against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi for alleged cheating and misappropriation of funds in acquiring ownership of now-defunct daily National Herald, has made a fresh request for Z-plus security cover.

Swamy reportedly enjoys Z cover when in Chennai, though the protection in the national Capital is lowered at Y category. Z-plus cover will entitle him to a pilot and escort, besides dedicated round-the-clock security. Z, on the other hand, will offer him only an escort vehicle, apart from security personnel.

The home ministry is yet to take a decision on Swamy's request, a senior ministry official told TOI on Tuesday.
