Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti takes 'black magic' issue to Rahul Gandhi

PUNE: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has told members of the Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti (ANS) that he would ask the state government to look into the allegations that the Pune police allegedly invited a tantric to crack the murder of anti-superstition crusader Narendra Dabholkar.

ANS executive president Avinash Patil and Dabholkar's son Hamid on Wednesday met Gandhi and apprised him about the recent development. A print media report had alleged that former police commissioner Gulabrao Pol had engaged a retired police constable, considered an expert tantrik, to invoke Dabholkar's soul and asked him questions to find clues to the murder mystery that rocked the state and country.

Pol, who opted for voluntary retirement from service a few months ago, has denied any such happenings during the course of investigation. But the ANS wants a probe in this case.

"Gandhi said that he would look into the matter. He gave a patient hearing to us and assured of substantial action. We told him that the state government has not taken enough efforts to probe Dabholkar's murder," Hamid Dabholkar told TOI.

He said they also met Union home minister Rajnath Singh and demanded that the government provide additional manpower and expedite the probe into the murder.

"It has been eleven months now, and the investigating agencies and police are groping in the dark. We want the Centre and state to answer at what stage the probe is and how long it will take to crack the case and punish culprits," said Hamid. Avinash Patil, Hamid and other ANS members also met Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal and CPI leader D Raja.

Meanwhile, ANS and like-minded organizations are planning programmes next month to denounce the state's and the police's failure to nab Dabholkar's murderers. He killed on August 20, 2013, when he was on a morning walk on the bridge near Omkareshwar temple.

Two motorcycle-borne unidentified assailants had fried four shots at Dabholkar from close range.
