Woman killed after TTE pushes her off train in Jalgaon

NASHIK: A woman was killed after a travel ticket examiner (TTE) allegedly pushed her out of an AC compartment of a moving train at Maharashtra's Jalgaon railway station on Thursday.

Ujwala Pandey (32), a resident of Balaji Peth in Jalgaon, had a general ticket and was trying to board the AC coach of the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Rajendra Nagar Patna Express at 5.45am, a Government Railway Police (GRP) official said. The police said the woman fell off while trying to board the moving train. They said Pandey fell in the gap between the platform and the train, and was run over.

But Pandey's nephew, Rahul Purohit, who had gone to the station to see her off, alleged in his complaint the TTE, Sampat Salunkhe, was drunk and pushed his aunt out of the train after it had started moving. Pandey's relatives said she had entered the AC coach since Salunkhe had promised to upgrade her ticket.

Salunkhe was arrested under IPC's Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) and sent for a medical check-up. The police said Salunkhe was a former wrestler, though it was not known at what level he had played the sport.

Pandey, who was accompanied by her 10-year-old daughter, was taking the train to visit a relative in Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh.

Purohit told TOI they first met Salunkhe and asked him if there was any chance of Pandey getting a seat in the coach by upgrading the ticket. "Salunkhe told my aunt to get in the coach and said he would upgrade her ticket," Purohit said. "However, as the train started moving a few minutes later, he pushed her out. She tried to resist but lost her balance and fell."

Fearing public outrage, Salunkhe hid in the train's pantry car. Some passengers pulled the chain to stop the train. When Railway Police Force personnel were taking Salunkhe to the GRP outpost, some people caught hold of him and thrashed him, the police said.

A GRP official said the relatives first refused to claim Pandey's body, but later agreed to do so when the police filed a case against Salunkhe.
