Tainted Gopal Kanda promises Haryana 'clean alternative'

GURGAON: It rained promises at the launch of Gopal Kanda's political party. The former minister and independent MLA from Sirsa, accused of abetting air hostess Geetika Sharma's suicide in 2012, announced the launch of the new political outfit — Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP) — on Friday afternoon at the office of the shut MDLR Airlines.

Kanda declared that HLP would contest all the 90 seats in the assembly elections.


Kanda, who arrived an hour late at the event, said the party would provide the people of Haryana with a "clean alternative" to the existing Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led Congress government. Kanda withdrew his support to the Hooda government two days ago.


He said his party would end dynastic rule, casteism and regionalism in politics and work for the development of the state. He went on to claim that if HLP came to power in Haryana, it would provide an allowance of Rs 2,500 to senior citizens, the salaries of policemen would be increased and better medical facilities would be provided to the people. In addition, he promised that Haryana would become a toll-free state and the party would work for women's safety.


Kanda also said that all party workers would be covered under a life insurance policy and could have access to various facilities through their membership cards.


The 46-year-old former minister for home, sports and industries, then said that in the 2009 general election, he had defeated INLD's candidate while the Congress candidate had come third. He said he had still extended support to the Congress party and alleged the chief minister had always created hurdles in the state's development process.


Kanda is currently out on bail after being an accused in Sharma's 2012 suicide, where he was charged with abetment. He has also been charged with forgery for cheating and harming the reputation of the victim. An employee of MDLR Airlines, the 23-year-old woman was found dead at her Ashok Vihar residence in northwest Delhi on August 5. In her suicide note, Sharma had said she was ending her life due to "harassment" by Kanda and co-accused Aruna Chadha.
