Samajwadi Party rout: If it were Assembly, not Lok Sabha polls

LUCKNOW: If state assembly elections are held today, BJP may win with 3/4th majority.

The assembly segment-wise result of Lok Sabha elections shows that the BJP was number one in 328 seats, while the ruling SP led in just 42. Congress was ahead in 15, BSP 9 and Apna Dal 9. In 2012, SP had formed government by winning 224 assembly seats. BSP had won 80, BJP 47, Congress 28 and Apna Dal one.

The results also throw up some interesting facts. SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav won Mainpuri seat with a margin of 3.64 lakh votes. However, results of assembly segments reveal that of five assembly segments, he lost in Bhongoan by 1140 votes to BJP's Shatrughan Singh Chauhan. In Azamgarh, the second seat from where the SP chief contested, the victory margin was over 63,000 but results of five assembly segments in the Lok Sabha constituency show that he got more votes in Muslim-dominated constituencies of Mubarkpur and Azamgarh in comparison Sagri and Mehnagar which have high numbers of Yadavs.

Mulayam's daughter-in-law Dimple won from Kannuaj by a margin of over 19,000 votes defeating BJP's Subrat Pathak in a tight contest. Results of five assembly segments in Kannauj Lok Sabha seat, however, show that she lost in two assembly constituencies - Tirwa and Bidhuna - to Pathak.

Among the two nephews of Mulayam, Dharmendra Yadav won in all the five assembly segments of Badaun but Akshay won three and lost in two to BJP's SP Singh Baghal.

In Varanasi, BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi won comfortably in all the five assembly segments with an overall margin of 3.71 lakh votes. AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal was second in four assembly segments, getting 38,415 votes in Kurmi-dominated Rohania seat and 53,359 in posh Varanasi Cantonment assembly seat. He also got good votes in Varanasi North (46,043) and Varanasi South (49881) having substantial number of Muslim voters. BSP's Vijat Prakash Jaiswal was second in Sevapuri assembly seat.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi won comfortably in all five assembly segments of Rae Bareli. Her son Rahul also won in all five segments of Amethi. However, Amethi runner up Smriti Irani got a good share of votes in rural seats like Gauriganj and Jagdishpur.

All seven Congress ministers lost in their respective seats. Only RPN Singh and Sri Prakash Jaiswal were able to win in one assembly segment out of five in their respective Lok Sabha constituency Kushinagar and Kanpur respectively. Singh won in Padrauna and Jaiswal in Kanpur Cantonment.

Muslim-dominated Rampur and Sambhal Lok Sabha constituencies saw a situation where SP candidates lost despite winning in three out of five assembly segments. In Rampur, SP's Naseer Khan was ahead of BJP's Nepal Singh in Suar, Chamraua and Rampur assembly segments. Singh led in Bilaspur and Milak. However, Singh's margin in two assembly seats was more than the total margin of Khan in the three. Similarly, SP's Sahfiq-ur-Rehman Barq won in Sambhal, Asmoli and Kundarki but lost in Bilari and Chandausi.

In Hardoi, of total five assembly segments, BJP won two, SP two and BSP one. However, overall vote of BJP candidate Anshul Verma was highest.

SP also won two out of five assembly segments in many other Lok Sabha seats including Allahabad, Moradabad and Kaushambi. In Jhansi, SP candidate Chandrapal Yadav was ahead of BJP's Uma Bharti in Mauranipur assembly segment.

BSP won two out of three assembly segments in Sitapur, Misrikh and Mohanlalganj. In Domariaganj, BJP's Jagdamika Pal was behind BSP's Mohammad Muqeem in one assembly segment.

Congress's Imran Masood, who was booked for his hate speech against Modi, won two out of five assembly segments in Saharanpur. Congress's Ratna Singh was ahead in Rampur Khas assembly segment in Pratapgarh. The Congress also won the assembly by-election of Rampur Khas, the seat which party leader Pramod Tiwari won nine-times in a row from 1980 till 2012. He resigned earlier this year after being nominated to Rajya Sabha. His daughter won the by-poll.

In Lucknow, Rita Bahugana Joshi lost in all the five assembly segments including Lucknow Cantonment from where she is MLA at present.
