KAPURTHALA: Rail Coach Factory (RCF) Kapurthala has produced record number of coaches in the just closed financial year as it reached the mark of 1701 coaches against installed capacity of 1500 coaches per annum. During the year, RCF produced 23 different variants of coaches for high-speed trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Double Decker and other trains.
Besides its own production, 150 unfurnished coaches were also turned out for RCF Rae Bareli, which is a new production unit of Indian Railways where production activity has just commenced.
A RCF spokesperson said that the factory in association with DRDE, also developed a highly cost-effective indigenous technology for treatment of faecal waste in coaches. "We have started fitting these bio toilets in all new coaches. Total 2096 biotoilets have been fitted in 2013-14. This will help in providing an almost maintenance free and a low cost solution to the problem of open defecation on the railway tracks," said the spokesperson.
Meanwhile, in order to bring high-end railway technology to the common man, LHB design stainless steel coaches are now being proliferated in non-AC mail/express trains also and 121 such coaches have also been produced during the year. RCF has planned to completely switch over to this new technology in near future.
In order to provide timely alarm to the passengers and crew in case of any fire incidence in the train, VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection Alarm) has also been provided on stainless steel coaches. Such coaches fitted with VESDA on Nizamuddin-Secunderabad Rajdhani and AC Double Decker rake were rolled out during 2013-14.
