Rahul Gandhi rally in Bellary

BELLARY: AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday chose to open his poll batting in Karnataka in the mining land of Bellary- which shaped and also put paid to the political fortunes of the BJP-by attacking Gujarat CM Narendra Modi for his squeaky silence on the corruption in the state during the BJP's rule.

Without taking Modi's name, Rahul said '' the BJP leader is touring the length and breadth of the country pontificating on corruption. But he is not speaking anything about corruption which took place in Karnataka when his party was in power and not even about in BJP ruled states like Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh,'' he added.

Addressing a well- attended public rally at the District Stadium in the sweltering sun, which was delayed by 90 minutes, Rahul in his 11-minute speech took jibes at Modi for holding fort on corruption with former CM B S Yeddyurappa seated beside him. Drawing a comparison between Yeddyurappa ruled Karnataka and S M Krishna's tenure, he said during the former's regime Bellary's iron ore was plundered, while the state achieved strides in IT development from 1999-2004.

'' When the Congress comes to power at the Centre again, we will ensure all your looted money by these people comes back to you. It will also be utilized to solve basic problems such as starting educational institutions here,'' he maintained.

Again without referring to former minister G Janardhana Reddy, the Congress leader said: ''Those who are in jail now will never come back to rule you again.''

Along with corruption, he also chose to strike a chord with the people of Bellary by reminding that his mother Sonia Gandhi had contested from here in 1999 and his grandmother, former PM Indira Gandhi from Chikmagalur post Emergency. ''Karnataka has an old relationship with the Congress,'' he added.
