Priyanka Gandhi’s popularity spikes in social media

LUCKNOW: Priyanka Gandhi's vigorous campaigning in Rae Bareli and Amethi is bringing gains to the Congress in the social media. Social media analytics indicate a sharp decline in the negative comments on the party since Priyanka began campaigning in the two constituencies a fortnight ago.

Priyanka's popularity in the cyber world soared since she made her appearance on April 12, the day her brother Rahul filed his nomination papers, says a weekly report by integrated digital services network, To The New. The report gives a comparative study of politicians and top political parties from April 8 onwards. The report places Priyanka at 7th position among the most important politicians in last fortnight. Narendra Modi leads the table, followed by Arvind Kejriwal, Kumar Vishwas, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Amit Shah. Samajwadi Party's 'loose cannon' Azam Khan, is ranked eight, followed by Rajnath Singh and Mulayam Singh. Interestingly, Priyanka didn't figure in the top 10 list before this.

Priyanka has visited Amethi and Rae Bareli 4-5 times since Rahul filed his nomination. Her focus on the two constituencies along with her attack on Narendra Modi, cousin Varun Gandhi and Amit Shah has rejuvenated the Congress. Experts say this push, added with her understanding of the media, has brought down Congress's criticism in the social media by 45% in a week which saw similar trends for the other top parties except the Aam Aadmi Party. In the same week, positive sentiments for Priyanka rose by 37%.

Analysts say the freshness in Priyanka's campaigning has benefitted the party in cyber world. "Sonia and Rahul were repeating the same things in their speeches. This couldn't break the clutter in the social media. With Priyanka hitting hard on opponents, there is sudden interest among the netizens. Also, the heightened media coverage is helping her," said an expert. The report summed that 17% of the mentions for Priyanka were negative, whereas 83% of them were either positive or neutral.
