AMRITSAR: For last one month, Amritsar's fame as a tourist destination had just had got an unlikely boost from Page 3 regulars and doyens of music and cricket.
From swashbuckling Delhi cricketer Gautam Gambhir to Bollywood's Kirron Kher and Vivek Oberoi and Santoor maestro pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, the list of support for BJP candidate Arun Jaitley was just endless.
On Monday, as the campaign was just hours away to its end, there was another fillip for this popular BJP candidate: Amit shah, who is being credited for having turned around the BJP's fortunes in Uttar Pradesh, made a surprise entry into the Holy City
Like his everyday practice, as Jaitley, sporting a saffron cap and jacket, went to the Golden Temple, there was a melee. Amid the loud hymn-singing at the Darbar Sahib, the BJP supporters and visitors lifted their mobile phones. They took an eyeful of both Shah and Jaitley. They jostled for space and negotiated their way to pose with them. The BJP stalwarts readily obliged them.
"Vote for a change" Shah told them as the BJP's Amritsar candidate looked re-assured.
As Shah flew back to UP, Jaitley wasted no time to run to his routine meetings and then left for a roadshow from the famous Court road to Chhearta. With drumbeats and bhangra, the onlookers ruptured into a joy. The mood soon became festive.
Though the Akali Dal's main man Bikram Majithia restricted himself to Majitha assembly constituency, there was a swell of other SAD leaders. From making Amritsar a religious destination to help enhance its entrepreneurial spirit, Jaitley knew his promises had gained popularity.
"Jaitley is a heavyweight in contemporary Indian politics" said Malkit, a dhaba owner, who walked a 5-km marathon along with Jaitley's entourage. But then no political discussion has ended in the last one month without residents spewing anger over local issues and against politicians.
The BJP local leaders were quick to realize this. So much that when BJP PM-pick Narendra Modi landed here last week, he ensured he touch upon the narcotics problem.
As the long day came to close, the BJP leader only looked poised, settled with his month-long campaign.
