DEHRADUN: Residents of Shyampur in Haridwar are no longer stepping out after dark as a leopard was spotted near a shrine on Tuesday. The Wildlife department is on lookout for the wild cat but has not been able to spot it so far.
Shyampur resident Vinay Bhatnagar said, "The leopard has attacked several dogs. One after another, many dogs have disappeared and we also found a trail of blood at many sites. The leopard was earlier seen in Krishna Nagar area. After a couple of days, some people said they saw it in Pashulok area as well. Just a day ago, it was found sitting near the shrine of Mainbhura Baba. It has become difficult for us to go out of our homes before sunrise or after sunset."
Dairy owner Rajender Kumar said he is quite worried about the safety of his cattle and is keeping a night-long vigil. His said business is also getting affected as he is no longer going out to distribute milk to his clients after sunset.
Range officer Rishikesh Radheshyam Sagar said the department is on the lookout for the leopard and is making all possible efforts to trap it and release it far from the area.
In March, a leopard had sneaked into a factory in SIDCUL area near Rajaji National Park and attacked three employees. It was caught later by the wildlife department and released in nearby jungles.
Last year too, a leopard had strayed from the jungle into a factory. Leopards have also been spotted in Hydel area and in the locality of rehabilitated people from Tehri.
