ALIGARH: Congress president Sonia Gandhi's rally in Aligarh started with chants of 'Har har tarakki', a play on the 'Har har Modi' chorus in Varanasi. The recorded lines were played before Gandhi arrived for the rally.
Taking on the BJP - Modi had recently accused her of practicing "rabid communalism"—she accused the saffron party of having a non-inclusive growth model. "Today, we are at a point where a battle of two ideologies is defining the Lok Sabha elections. While BJP believes in identifying a common man by his religion and region, Congress identifies a common man by his capabilities," she said.
She soon warmed to the Congress campaign theme of having provided inclusive growth and development. Listing the party's achievements since independence, she said, "I am proud of the fact that we have been in power for 55 years. Look at the work we have done - the average age has doubled from 32 years. This was possible only because quality of life was improved. The country produces more than 25 crore tonnes of grain today. More girls are going to school than before. We have come to power so many times only because of our work. Would people have voted if we hadn't worked for them?"
In a bid to reach out to Muslim voters, she said that the Congress has worked hard for minorities, making it easy for them to take loans. She blamed the BJP for "the misinformation being spread." "Kuch log chashma pehne hai aur unhe sach dikhayi nahi deta (Some people are wearing glasses and they can't see the truth). The opposition is making these false statements because they think people are naive. But people understand everything." she said. Incidentally, even though organizers were expecting a crowd of around 50,000, less than 10,000 turned up at the rally.
