NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Friday banned BJP leader Amit Shah and SP leader Azam Khan from holding public meetings, processions or road shows in Uttar Pradesh.
Cracking the whip on the two leaders for their hate speeches while campaigning, the EC ordered the UP government to lodge FIRs and initiate criminal proceedings against them, if it has not been done yet.
The EC has also asked authorities to ensure no act of commission or omission is resorted to by the two leaders that can affect public tranquility.
The poll panel pulled up the Akhilesh Yadav government and accused it of going soft on FIR against Azam Khan.
Both Azam Khan and Amit Shah were under EC's scrutiny for their hate speeches.
