Crorepati seers seek nirvana in biggest political Kumbh

LUCKNOW: Sadhus are supposed to renounce the world and lead the life of recluse. But several seers in fray in the Lok Sabha elections in UP, as per affidavits filed by them, are not only crorepatis and own firearms, they also have criminal cases registered against them. The cases range from murder to rape, adultery, theft to vitiating communal harmony.

The most 'illustrious' CV is of Swami Sachidanand Hari Sakshi alias Sakshi Maharaj, who runs an ashram in Etah. The 58-year old seer has a doctorate degree and declared Rs 5.93 lakh income in 2012-13. Under source of income and profession head, he has mentioned pensioner, agriculture, katha vachak (storey teller) and donation. His total assets are worth Rs 3.21 crore, including four SUVs, a car and a motorcycle worth Rs 27.10 lakh, jewellery Rs 20.90 lakh, three firearms of Rs 2.20 lakh and land worth Rs 2.05 crore.


Arrested and jailed several times on various criminal charges, Sakshi Maharaj has eight criminal cases against him which include charges related to murder, rioting, dacoity with murder, criminal intimidation, promoting enmity between different groups, forgery, etc.


He is also an accused in Barbi Mosque demolition case. Sakshi won two Lok Sabha elections (1996 and 1998) from Farrukhabad on BJP ticket. In 1999, when denied ticket, he switched loyalty to SP and got himself nominated to the Rajya Sabha. His name also figured in the cash-to-query scam when a sting operation caught him on camera demanding money for asking questions in Lok Sabha and allotment of MPLAD work. He was also accused of rape in 2000. His name figured in the murder of BJP leader Brhama Dutt Dwivedi in 1997. In both cases, he got away due to lack of evidence.


BJP's Jhansi candidate and former MP chief minister, Uma Bharati (55), is MLA from Charkhari. Uma is only class V passout. She has 13 cases, including Babri Mosque demolition, against her. The charges include attempt to murder, assertions prejudicial to national-integration, criminal intimidation, illegal payments in elections, promoting enmity between different groups, obscene acts and songs and rioting. The Sadhvi, who claims to have dedicated herself to social cause, has mentioned salary as MLA and ex-MP pension as source of income. Her annual income in 2012-13 was Rs 4.48 lakh. She has total assets worth Rs 1.43 crore, which include residential buildings worth Rs 97.50 lakh and gold, silver utensil and jewellery worth Rs 35 lakh.


The firebrand four times BJP MP from Gorakhpur, Yogi Adityanath (41), is contesting from Gorakhpur again. He is a science graduate and has assets worth Rs 72.17 lakh. Among other things, Yogi is the chief priest of Goraksha peeth. He owns two firearms worth Rs 1.80 lakh and jewellery worth Rs 45,000. His assets have increased seven times in last decade. In 2004, he had shown assets worth Rs 9.60 lakh and had only one four wheeler. Now, he has three SUVs (worth Rs 36 lakh). He has shown Rs seven lakh as income in 2013 and source of income is salary and allowances as MP. Yogi has three criminal cases against him, including those of murder, attempt to murder, rioting and inciting communal passion.


BJP candidate from Fathpur, Sadhavi Niranjan Jyoti (47), is an intermediate. She is an MLA from Hamirpur. She has shown Rs 2.39 annual income in 2012-13 and declared total assets of Rs 41.23 lakh, which include a SUV worth Rs 11.50 lakh, jewellery Rs 75,000 and agriculture land Rs 9 lakh. She is BJP MLA from Hamirpur but has shown 'Katha Vachak (storey telling)' as profession in her affidavit. She has mentioned one case under non-cognizable offence category which include charges related to criminal intimidation, voluntarily causing hurt and adultery.


Sadhvi Savitri Bai Phoole (33), BJP candidate from Bahraich, is MLA from Balha and faces eight criminal cases. Charges include rioting, voluntarily causing hurt, house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation and dealing in stolen property. She is a graduate and has total assets worth Rs 11.21 lakh which include a SUV. In source of income/profession column, the Sadhvi, who runs an ashram, has mentioned social service.


Acharya Pramod Krishnan (51), head of Kalki Dham, is Congress candidate from Sambhal. He is married and has declared assets worth Rs 4.99 crore, which include jewellery worth Rs 28.60 lakh, two firearms Rs 1.45 lakh, agriculture land Rs 1 crore and residential buildings Rs 3.50 crore. His source of income is agriculture but has not shown any income in 2012-13.


Swami Paglanand (49), a class 10 passout, is a bachelor. He runs an ashram, is contesting from Badaun on the ticket of Mahan Dal, an ally of Congress. He has declared total assets worth Rs 17.95 lakh which includes a SUV Rs 11 lakh, jewellery Rs 4.56 lakh. He earns his living through agriculture and mentioned his profession as katha vachak and puja path Annual income in 2012-13 was Rs 2.20 lakh. Interestingly, at one place in his affidavit, he has shown that he owns two acre land in Badaun purchased in 2010 at Rs 1.07 lakh but has mentioned its current market value as Zero. At another place in the document, he has shown current market value of the property as Rs 10 lakh and assets Rs 19.02 lakh.
