BJP targets UPA over black money after SC indictment

NEW DELHI: A day after the Supreme Court pulled up the Centre for failing to implement its three-year-old directions on black money, BJP on Wednesday charged the Congress-led UPA with "misleading" the nation on the issue and having no will to work on it.

The party alleged that whenever Congress came to power, its functioning is marked by corruption, scandals, inflation and inaction, letting black money thrive. "We charge that on black money, this government has failed the people of India... This explains clearly that this party has no will to work on black money. It is only misguiding the nation," said BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman.

The Centre had on Tuesday faced the ire of the Supreme Court for failing to implement its three-year-old directions including setting up of a SIT to probe black money and disclosing information received from Germany about individuals stashing money in Liechtenstein Bank.

"Whenever Congress is in power, corruption, scandals, inflation and inaction are all clearly linked with one another," she said.

Accusing the government of defying the Supreme Court, Sitharaman asked, "Can there be a greater chiding of a government by the Supreme Court?" She also accused the UPA of delaying the ratification of the 2005 United Nations Convention against Corruption, which could have helped the government obtain sensitive banking information about those who stashed their money abroad in violation of the law of the land.

Sitharaman said exchange of information for prevention of tax fraud became possible after the United Nations Convention against Corruption came into force in December, 2005 and the UPA has only been "misleading" the people. "This government did not make any effort to ratify the convention ... After much delay and pressure, UPA government ratified this convention only in May 2011," she said, reminding that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had promised in 2009 that his government will bring back black money within first 100 days of his taking charge.

Recalling its senior leader L K Advani's campaign against black money during the 2009 elections and how Congress leaders had mocked at him, she said, "It is utterly shameful that till date names of account-holders in foreign banks have not been disclosed."
