BJP candidate Chandan Mitra caught in a controversy

KOLKATA: BJP candidate from Hooghly, Chandan Mitra, a journalist, was in the midst of controversy as Trinamool alleged that he was found to be distributing cash and leaflets at Chinsurah station on Tuesday monring. As the campaign period had ended so Trinamool men lodged complaint with the DM of Hooghly against BJP for trying to influencing the voters and distributing cash.

The election for the Hooghly seat will take place on Wednesday. This created a tension in the area. Later Bengal's assistant chief electoral officer Amit Jyoti Bhattacharya clarified that the FIR was lodged against unknown people for distributing cash and leaflets. EC officials cross checked the matter with Mitra.

Mitra a former Rajya Sabha member is now contesting the Lok Sabha polls for the first time. He is placed against sitting Trinamool MP Ratna De Nag.

Mitra however denied the charges and alleged that it was a plot by the opposition to frame him a day before the polls in order to humiliate him.

It might be mentioned that on Sunday Narendra Modi held a rally at Serampore urging voters to vote in favour of BJP candidates of Serampore, Hooghly and Uluberia. Bappi Lahiri is contesting from Serampore and fromer IPS officer RK Mohanty from Uluberia.
