Amit Shah only talked about people venting their grievances: BJP

NEW DELHI: Playing down the "revenge comment made by party general secretary and Narendra Modi's key aide Amit Shah, BJP on Sunday said he had only talked about people venting their ire through their votes.

Senior party leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said elections were a way for people to vent their grievances and Shah had only meant that when he talked of "badla" (revenge). "What is new is this? What is wrong if in a democracy a voter takes revenge for his suffering through vote in a non-violent and peaceful manner," he added.

Prasad also slammed the Samajwadi party and Congress for the FIR against Shah. "The FIR against Amit Bhai is a badla or revenge that is being taken by the ruling Samajwadi Party, and the SP is backed by Congress. The case has been registered by UP government for vote bank. It is not a bonafide FIR, but an FIR designed for vote bank politics," Prasad added.

Meanwhile, senior BJP leader and the party's Amritsar candidate Arun Jaitley on Sunday said party workers should avoid controversies to maintain focus on campaign issues and warned them against being complacent. "Party supporters must measure their words. We must remain focused on campaign issue and avoid controversies. The going is good. We should not take our eyes off the ball," he blogged.

Jaitley said the "wave" for Modi and "a last minute push by party supporters is capable of taking the NDA into 300 seat range" but warned workers against being complacent.

"Complacency and over confidence are always counter- productive ... A last minute push by party supporters is capable of taking the NDA into 300 seat range," he said.

Ahead of the first round of polling on Monday, he said, "My appeal to BJP supporters is that no election is over till the last vote is polled. The BJP is the clear front-runner with its allies. In the dying hours of the campaign before the polling in each state, the groundswell for Narendra Modi, the BJP/NDA, and the desire for change is becoming clearer."
