Ahmed Patel: Confident of Congress, allies getting majority

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Ahmed Patel on Tuesday denied having said that Congress had decided to support a "secular front", asserting that the party, along with its allies, will get a majority on its own.

Referring to the report which quoted him as saying that Congress was ready to make any sacrifice in order to keep "communal" forces at bay, Patel said, "I have been misquoted. I have consistently said that Congress, along with its allies, will get a majority. My confidence gets only stronger as we near the home stretch." He added that he was "not authorized to craft the party's stance on his own".

Replying to a question from TOI on the possibility of Congress supporting other "secular" parties to form a government in order to deny power to BJP, Patel had said Congress would not flinch from making any sacrifice to keep "communal" forces at bay.

He clarified on Tuesday that his answer to a "hypothetical question" was "misinterpreted". "I, in response to a hypothetical question, only underlined the party's known ideological stand. As far as facts are concerned, we are confident of comfortably getting past the halfway mark along with our existing allies," Patel said.

"The feedback that we have been getting from our units across the country has been very encouraging, and shows that people have again seen through the BJP's deception game," he further said.

Patel, political secretary to Sonia Gandhi, said the party's stand on alliances was decided by the Congress president in consultation with other party leaders.
