SC grants conditional bail to Sahara chief Subrata Roy

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted conditional bail to Sahara chief Subrata Roy.

The prepared order was pronounced by a bench of Justice K S Radhakrishnan and J S Khehar immediately after the court assembled after the lunch.

The bench said it has gone through the fresh proposal and is granting a bail with a precondition that Subrata Roy will have to deposit Rs 10,000 crore with the market regulator Sebi.

The Supreme Court said out of Rs 10,000 crore, the Sahara chief has to pay Rs 5,000 crore in cash and furnish bank guarantee for the rest.

The Sahara chief has promised an upfront deposit of Rs 2,500 crore and rest 18,000 crore through installments.

Sahara group on Tuesday had submitted a new proposal for refunding Rs 20,000 crore of investors money before the Supreme Court.

Roy was sent to jail on March 4 by the top court in connection with contempt proceedings over two group companies' failure to pay Rs 20,000 crore by way of dues to market regulator Sebi.
