Several bureaucrats as well as the former CMD of Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC) had joined BJP in the hope of bagging a ticket. But their dreams were shattered with the party central election committee ignoring the new entrants altogether while distributing seats. With the exception of former DGP V D Ram, all other former bureaucrats have been ignored by the party.
Following the Delhi assembly election and the meteoric rise of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), many political parties including BJP, had said youngsters and working professionals would be given a chance to contest the coming polls in a bid to counter the AAP effect.
Mukhtyar Singh, former chairman of the Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission, had joined BJP in February in the hope of a ticket while senior IAS officer Bimal Kirti Singh, principal secretary of the department of energy, resigned from service to join the BJP at a function in New Delhi last week.
G K Pillai, retired CMD of HEC, also joined BJP earlier this month in the anticipation of a ticket for Ranchi seat. An IPS officer and noted sportsperson, Arun Oraon also sought retirement under the voluntary retirement scheme last week in the hope of contesting the polls on a BJP ticket. Though Oraon has not yet joined the party officially, he is learnt to have negotiated with the party saying that he will join it only if he is given a ticket from Lohardaga parliamentary constituency.
Saryu Rai, BJP state executive committee member and former MLA, said some of the bureaucrats have been given tickets at the national level. "Former DGP V D Ram is one such candidate from Jharkhand," he said, admitting that the chances of winning of the candidate is crucial for nomination. "I had written to the Election Commission and political parties to adopt a system where tickets are given to those, who have been active members of the party for at least three years," he said.
While Bimal Kirti Singh is still hopeful of getting a ticket for Jamshedpur, the only seat in Jharkhand from where BJP has not yet declared a candidate, Mukhtyar Singh and Pillai have no hopes left. While Singh was eying the Palamu (SC) reserved seat, Pillai wanted to contest the Ranchi seat. Oraon was not available for comment though sources close to him said he may contest from any other party. "Talks are underway and it would be premature to comment at this moment," said a close aide of Oraon.
