"As far as leadership issue is concerned, we have been maintaining that the Congress president ( Sonia Gandhi) is there. The whole country and the party knows that it is Rahul who comes after the Congress president in the party," Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said.
"As far as the prime ministerial candidate is concerned, it has to be decided by him (Rahul), the Congress president and party leaders after due deliberations," he added.
Dwivedi reminded that Sonia has already said that the name of the Congress's prime ministerial candidate would be declared at an opportune time.
The statement came amid speculation that the Congress vice-president would be named as the party's face for the 2014 Lok Sabha poll at the AICC meeting scheduled next month.
Dwivedi was responding to questions on whether the AICC meeting scheduled for January 17 could see the party naming Rahul as its PM candidate for Lok Sabha polls.
"In matters of politics... things are not decided as per mathematical formula. Here, decisions are taken according to the circumstances. Let us see what happens," he said.
Dwivedi said the coming AICC meeting would discuss issues such as price rise and implementation of Lokpal and Lokayukta bill and food security bill in states run by Congress.
