The schemes have been sanctioned under the centrally sponsored Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns (UIDSSMT). With this the work on these projects will begin in 15 municipal corporations soon.
Major projects among the sanctioned ones will be five drinking water projects for which Rs 383 crore have been allotted. Similarly, Rs 190 crore for eight urban development projects, Rs 54 crore for five solid waste management treatment plants, Rs 42 crore for road maintenance, Rs 50 crore for sewage treatment plants and Rs 35 crore for drainage works have been allotted and they all feature under this scheme.
The minister said that Malappuram municipality has received the maximum amount as per the projects submitted by it. While it has received Rs 362 crore for various projects, Kottayam municipality got Rs 180 crore. Manjeri municipality has bagged Rs 91 crore.
The Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project will be the nodal agency for carrying out these works in different municipalities.
The minister said although several municipalities have submitted many projects under the UIDSSMT, they are under consideration of the Centre. At present, the projects which are in the transition phase have received the nod from the Centre. For the local bodies the Centre has given time till January 15 to submit their project proposals, he added.
