Police had information that Pol, who had been absconding for the past five days, would go home on Tuesday night and so laid a trap for him.
Police suspect that Pol was one of the eight attackers involved in killing Obado Uzoma Simeon on the intervening night of October 30 to 31. Pol was taken to Anjuna police station and later remanded to 10 days police custody by a Mapusa court.
Police are in search of one Omkar Palyekar from Chapora who is suspected to be the main accused in the murder. Palyekar, along with two others, was wanted in an August 2012 assault of a Chapora resident.
Sources said that in a drug rivalry incident in November 2012, Simeon had allegedly shot at Palyekar's younger brother but the bullet hit the side of a car. This incident had triggered off the drug war between the Nigerians and the local drug peddlers.
Sources said that deputy inspector general of police K K Vyas and north Goa superintendent of police Priyanka Kashyap were in Anjuna on Tuesday night working out strategies to nab the assailants of the Nigerian.
Sources said police have formed three teams to search and hold the remaining accused who are believed to have crossed the state's borders.
With Pol's arrest police are hopeful of obtaining vital information concerning the mastermind behind the murder and the other seven accused.
Police sources said Pol is a history sheeter and was known for anti-social activities. He was involved in assaults in the past though he was never held in any drug related case. Pol is allegedly part of a gang from Chapora involved in the drug trade, police sources said.
