Construction of proposed state assembly buildings in Uttarakhand to begin in November

DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand chief minister Vijay Bahuguna said on Saturday that the construction for the proposed Vidhan Sabha buildings at Gairsain in Chamoli district and Raipur in Dehradun will begin on November 9 and November 14 respectively.

He said the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) has been entrusted with building the two state assembly buildings.

Bahuguna said that the centre has already released Rs 80 crore and Rs 58 crore for the construction work at Gairsain and Dehradun respectively. The decision was taken at a high level meeting on Friday.

This comes nine months after the state government laid the foundation stone in Gairsain on January 14. The decision to build the assembly at Gairsain was taken at a meeting in Gairsain on November 9, 2012.

Bahuguna said that the government had decided on building in the state assembly in Gairsain to connect socially and economically backward regions with Dehradun.

"Sole objective of the exercise is to bring people of backward regions like Gairsain into the mainstream so that they may not feel neglected any longer," he said.

He said once the building is ready, government will hold a meeting of its cabinet there once in a year.

Bahuguna hoped that the construction will help provide job opportunities to locals and boost development activities in the region.

He said government will also lay the foundation stone of proposed state assembly building before beginning the process of its construction at Raipur in Dehradun on November 19.

Chief secretary Subhash Kumar said that a team of state assembly officials and NBCC experts flew to Gairsain on Saturday to do the ground work for the construction.
