Atal Bihari Vajpayee's niece may quit BJP

RAIPUR: In what could become a major embarrassment to the ruling BJP in Chhattisgarh, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's niece Mrs Karuna Shukla, a former member of parliament, has dropped hints that she might quit the party.

A large number of supporters of Mrs Shukla had gathered at her residence in Anand Nagar in the state capital on Saturday morning after Karuna Shukla, who was earlier president of BJP National Mahila Morcha, indicated that she was dissatisfied of being side-lined in the party ever since former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's absence from the active political scene.

Sources close to Mrs Shukla said she was peeved at being ignored, both by the Raman Singh government during the last couple of years, and now by the party as she has been kept aloof from all activities related to the preparations for the polls. They claimed that Karuna Shukla could announce her resignation from the party any time from now.

In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, Mrs Shukla had won from Janjgir to become a member of the 14thLok Sabha. She lost parliamentary election for 15 Lok Sabha election from Korba in 2009 to Dr Charan Das Mahant, now a union minister of state for agriculture and food processing and president of the Chhattisgarh Congress.

Mrs Shukla could not be reached for her comments as she was busy meeting her supporters on Saturday.
