French woman dies in Lahaul

MANALI: Christine Marieannick, a 50-year-old French woman, who was visiting Ladakh and Himachal with her family, died after she complained of unbearable pain in her chest in a hotel in Lahaul on Sunday night, police said.

According to police, the woman was travelling with her husband and children and they had stopped at Keylong for night halt when she complained of severe pain. "They had come from Ladakh and had to continue their journey towards Manali. She was admitted to the regional hospital where she was given all possible treatment, but could not be saved," Lahaul-Spiti superintendent of police Sunil Kumar said.

The French embassy was informed about the death and postmortem of the deceased's body was carried out in Keylong hospital. According to the postmortem report, the deceased was suffering from an infection in her heart. Police said the body has handed over to family members according to instructions from the embassy.

On August 4, a 22-year-old Vietnamese research scholar was killed near Gemur village of Lahaul after she slipped from a mountain face. In another case, a Swiss biker who was riding on the Manali-Leh road with his friends had died of heart attack near Tandi Diet in Lahaul on July 18.

A government-run hospital in Keylong is the only trustworthy hospital in the entire Lahaul valley, which serves thousands of residents of over hundred villages. Even this hospital is suffering shortage of staff. The hospital is lacking all major machines including CT scan and MRI and it has no specialist doctor or surgeon. Residents are forced to visit Kullu, Shimla or Chandigarh for their treatment.
