Verma, who has Mysuru connection, has told the authorities attached to the Mysuru Palace Board, the custodian of the city's prized possession, that he would be back some time and take a detailed tour of the Amba Vilas palace. Commonly known as the Mysuru Palace, the hundred year old structure left him fascinated. "He took the tour of the palace for an hour and was amused with the beauty and majesty of the palace. He said he will get back and spend some more time at the palace," T S Subramanya, deputy director of the board, said. He was happy with the way the monument has been preserved and said he will be back some time as he want to learn more about its history, Subramanya told The Times of India. He visited ornate Kalyan Mantap, dolls pavilion and Durbar hall.
The US officials got in touch with the board two days back to fix the appointment. During his visit to the palace, Verma called on Mysuru maharani Pramoda Devi Wadiyar and had tea with her. He wanted to meet her as some of his family members were known to the royal family members, the maharani in particular, sources stated. He spent 25 minutes discussing with the maharani at the residential palace which is attached to the palace.
Verma, who is in Mysuru to formally inaugurate the renovated Oriental Research Institute building, also visited the Mysuru campus of Infosys after visiting the palace. Sources said he met the IT bellwether cofounder N R Narayan Murthy and took tour of the campus located in Hebbal industrial area. He had lunch at the Infosys.
The US ambassador interacted with students at the Vivekananda Institute for Leadership Development (V-LEAD), an initiative of the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement which is working for community development. He was informed about the Vivekananda Institute of Indian Studies (VIIS), set up by the SVYM for promoting and facilitating the study, research, development and dissemination of Indian culture, spirituality, arts and music aimed at introducing India to the world. We apprised him of the activities of the VIIS and its partnership with over 20 universities to offer the Master in Development Management (MDM) course, VISS director Sindhu Suresh said.
Verma interacted with the MDM students and expressed happiness for being appointed as the US Ambassador to India when the partnership between the two countries and the people was growing stronger. He said relationships between the two countries in not restricted to economic sector as the US is focused on the social sector too. Social activist and SVYM leader R Balasubramaniam, CEO Dr M A Balasubramanya, and vice president Dr M R Seetharam were present.
The ambassador visited JSS Polytechnic for the differently abled at SJCE campus in Manasa Gangothri too. On Tuesday evening, he met members of Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and interacted with them. The authorities said he left to Bengaluru en route to Delhi.
