Stealth destroyer to be launched into sea today

MUMBAI: The first of the four ships (P15-B stealth destroyers) is scheduled to be launched at Mazagaon Docks Limited (MDL), on April 20. The vessel will be launched in the conventional end launching method with a launch weight of approximately 3000 tons. This ship is slated to be christened as Visakhapatnam on commissioning to the Indian Navy.

In ship building the underwater hull cannot be constructed on the slipway or dry-dock. The process of the hull, constructed on slip way, being put to sea for the first time is called launching. The 163 m long ship, will be propelled by four gas turbines, is designed to achieve a speed of over 30 knots at a displacement of approximately 7300 tons.


This indigenously designed stealth destroyer will have state-of-the-art weapons, sensors, an advance Action Information System, in Integrated Platform Management system, sophisticated Power Distribution System and a host of other advanced features.


MDL, the country's premier warship building yard is engaged today in producing sophisticated world class warships and submarines. "At present four destroyers and six submarines are under various stages of construction. Visakhapatnam is one of the four destroyer ships that will launched on Monday," said the defence spokesperson.
