Safe’ Gujarat unsafe for kids

VADODARA: The 'Safe for Women' tag is something that Gujarat's lawmakers often extol. But is the state safe for children? The answer is 'No', if the study of Child-Line India Foundation and Indian Medical Association (IMA) is anything to go by.

A shocking revelation of the study is that seven out of every 10 children in Gujarat have been victims of sexual abuse. Among these, children in the 11-15 year age group are the most susceptible to sexual abuse, accounting for 47% of the total cases.

Moreover, researchers said nearly 90% of the cases are not even reported and the data they compiled is based just on the 10% whose parents came forward to fight. "Most victims are confused about what happened with them while others are threatened and told to hide the abuse," said paediatrician and IMA-Vadodara member Dr Paresh Majmudar.
