The 30-year-old had come to attend the rally from Chandigarh along with 25-30 other volunteers. Deshwar said, "Four-five AAP volunteers and I noticed him wrapping his gamcha (scarf) around his neck and rushed to bring him down. There were around 20 policemen standing under the tree, but they made no move to help even as I climbed up the tree with the help of others. But by that time he had already hanged himself and was dead when I caught hold of him."
Deshwar said the event left him terrified as he couldn't save Gajendra.
"I tried to loosen the knot of the gamchha supporting his body with one hand. The volunteers had spread a mat to catch his body, but cops remained mute spectators. The moment his body fell, I got terrified and lost control over myself. The other volunteers supported me and splashed water on my face to bring me back to normal," he said.
A wedding photographer by profession, Deshwar said he'll always have this regret of being late by a few seconds to save the man's life. "I won't be able to forget the event. If police had helped us his life could have been saved. Why didn't the cops respond? They should be sacked for negligence," he said.
