Outside 12, Tughlak Lane - Rahul's bungalow in Lutyen's Delhi - there were fireworks to mark the homecoming. At the gate stood Shankar and Das, poor dalits from Agra-Malwa in MP, waiting for "justice". Hope was ostensibly in the air. Only Sandeep Diskhit, red-flagging succession in the Congress, stuck out.
Rahul Gandhi returned from his seemingly never-ending sabbatical on Thursday, infusing energy in the dispirited organization which suddenly made all the criticism appear irrelevant. "The army does not exist without the general," exclaimed a loyalist.
If anything, Rahul's return yet again proved that the dynasty was alive. As news became public of Rahul's return, there were cameras trained at him when he drove home accompanied by securitymen. Mother Sonia and sister Priyanka were waiting for him.
Not just Rahul, the dog with him triggered huge curiosity as he drove down to 10, Janpath later in the day. Inquiries revealed the canine companion was a Jack Russell Terrier. Rahul apparently has had a pair for the last seven years. A Congressman claimed that the dogs have been seen in the car that goes to fetch Rahul from Parliament.
For a few hours on Thursday, Rahul eclipsed PM Narendra Modi in Canada, as cameras focused on the famous return. It drove an exasperated BJP spokesman to slam the scion while reminding him that politics was not a "part-time job". Congressmen may agree with him behind closed doors, but not on Thursday. And definitely not in public.
Towards the end of the day, things appeared to be back to normal. The upcoming farmers rally on Sunday and Rahul's presence there was the main talking point. And to the chagrin of the Dikshit family and Amarinder Singh, there were many who happily claimed, "Rahul will be the party president soon."
