PM Narendra Modi ‘deeply shattered’ by farmer’s suicide at AAP rally in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said he was "deeply shattered" and "disappointed" over the suicide committed by a farmer here and told the farming community not to consider themselves alone.

"At no point must the hardworking farmer think he is alone. We are all together in creating a better tomorrow for the farmers of India," he added.

Gajendra Singh, a farmer from Dausa in Rajasthan, committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in full public view in the presence of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal at an Aam Aadmi Party rally.

A father of three, Gajendra climbed a neem tree in Jantar Mantar, a stone's throw away from Parliament, put his "gamcha" (towel) around his neck and tied it to a branch.

Political blame game begins soon after farmer commits suicide at AAP rally in Delhi

Political parties began their blame game soon after the farmer committed suicide during AAP's rally in Delhi against the controversial land acquisition bill.

The dramatic death of Gajendra Singh, a father of three, immediately turned into a political drama, with the Aam Aadmi Party blaming Delhi Police and the BJP and the Congress attacking Kejriwal and the AAP.

AAP leaders accused the police of being mute spectators who did nothing to save a precious life and not acting in time. AAP leader also blamed Modi's BJP, saying the controversial land bill and their failure to look after farmers was the reason for the suicide.
