Pakistan seeks boat seizure details from MEA

NEW DELHI: After the Indian Coast Guard apprehended eight alleged Pakistani smugglers off the coast of Gujarat, Pakistan on Wednesday officially approached MEA seeking details of the incident.

According to Indian authorities, a boat carrying 232 kg of narcotics worth Rs 600 crore was seized and eight Pakistani crew on board were arrested in a joint intelligence-based operation by the Indian Navy and Coast Guard from international waters off Gujarat coast on April 20.

"Pakistan high commission has formally approached the ministry of external affairs to share details of seizure of two Pakistani boats and apprehension of their crew members this past weekend as reported by the Indian media," Manzoor Ali Memon, Pakistani Press Attache here, said.

The crew were paraded on Tuesday before media on board ICG vessel 'Sangram', which intercepted and apprehended the boat, and packets of the seized contraband, satellite phones and GPS system were also displayed.

Navy officials were quoted as saying they had an input about a second suspicious boat too. "However, when we searched the area, no such boat was found," they said.

Pakistan diplomats are also riled by the fact that Indian authorities did not inform them officially about the Pakistanis evacuated by Indian ships from Yemen. They said they expected better from the authorities here with Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif choosing to send Indians evacuated by Pakistan to Delhi by a special plane.
