NIA chargesheet could spell trouble for DU professor in jail for suspected links to Maoists

NEW DELHI: A chargesheet filed by National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a Kerala court on Wednesday may have adverse implication for Delhi University activist professor GN Saibaba. The professor of English at Ram Lal Anand College was arrested by Maharashtra police last year for alleged links with CPI (Maoist). He is still in Nagpur jail.

The NIA chargesheet claims to have evidence to show that Revolutionary Democratic Front of India (RDFI) is a front organization of CPI (Maoist). This could spell further trouble for Saibaba who is vice president of the organization.

Security agencies are also planning to use such evidence against all such activists who they suspect to be working in CPI (Maoist) front organizations. "We have evidence to show that RDFI is a front organization of CPI Maoist. It is already proscribed in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The chargesheet is likely to open doors for more such action against activists who support Maoists," said an NIA officer.

Maharashtra police is already preparing to use the chargesheet to strengthen its case against Saibaba. "In our case too we have said RDFI is a front for CPI Maoist. We will take a look at NIA chargesheet and see how it can help our case," IG Nagpur range RG Kadam told TOI.

Saibaba, who is currently on hunger strike in Nagpur jail demanding proper medical care and food, has repeatedly claimed that he like several others is being harassed just for having a view contrary to government's idea of socio-politics.

The NIA chargesheet was filed against five persons from Kerala who were arrested by Mavelikkara police in Alappuzha from a lodge based on information that a secret meeting RDFI activists was happening at the venue for some anti-national activity.

NIA took over the investigations in 2012. The chargesheet claims: "Investigation by NIA revealed that RDF is a frontal organization of CPI (Maoist) in Kerala and that the leaders of Kerala state unit of RDF conspired to form a constituent student's organization of RDF with the intention of recruiting students and youth into its fold for furthering the objectives of the proscribed party."

It claims: "In furtherance of the conspiracy, they organized a secret meeting at Cherumadom lodge in Mavelikkara on December 29, 2012 in which leaders, workers and supporters of RDF participated. The meeting was organized with the intention of associating, professing to associate and supporting the activities of proscribed terrorist organization (CPI) Maoist thereby threatening the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India."

"The accused also intended to excite disaffection towards the government established by law in India," it says.

The accused have been identified as Rajesh Madhavan, Gopal, Devarajan, Bahuleyan and Ajaya Kumar.

According to a website dedicated to relaying of messages from CPI (Maoist), "the RDF is a federation of mass organizations in India, including organizations of workers, peasants, youth, students, women, and revolutionary cultural groups. It was formed in 2005 as a merger of earlier organizations, including the anti-imperialist organization, the All India Peoples Resistence Forum (AIPRF)."

It also quotes Saibaba as saying: "In most states, its (RDF) members and main functionaries are arrested and incarcerated. Hundreds of its functionaries either suffer in prisons or work in different forms. But it still works among the people vigorously. Its members are being branded as having links with CPI (Maoist) just because it also believes in revolutionary transformation of Indian Society. But then an overwhelming majority of the Subcontinent does so."
