News of PM scolding Giriraj a ‘gimmick’: Congress

NEW DELHI: Dismissing reports that he had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi who "pulled him up" for his objectionable remarks about Sonia Gandhi, Union minister Giriraj Singh on Tuesday said no such meeting had taken place nor had he broken down before the PM.

"No," he told reporters who asked him whether he had become emotional during a meeting with Modi on Tuesday. Television channels had earlier reported that Modi had pulled him up for his racist remarks against Sonia last month.

"The meeting did not taken place. Who told you I met him," Singh said when asked about his reported meeting with the Prime Minister.

Congress, meanwhile, dubbed the claims of Singh being pulled up as a "gimmick". "The minister has already slammed reports about his being pulled up and his breaking down. Besides, why did the PM scold him after one month," AICC spokesman Shakeel Ahmed said, adding, "There is no place for these gimmicks."

While making light of the reported disciplinary action at the BJP parliamentary party meeting, Ahmed said, "Instead of these gimmicks, the PM should ensure that nobody uses such objectionable language."

Singh was on Monday forced to express regret in Lok Sabha for his remarks against Sonia after vociferous protests from Congress members.

"I never meant to offend anyone. But if my comments hurt anyone's sentiments, I regret it," Singh said when Speaker Sumitra Mahajan asked him to respond after the House saw loud protests from Congress members, who and sought his resignation.

Singh, minister of state for micro, small and medium enterprises, was under fire for his barb at Sonia, asking whether Congress would have accepted her leadership had she not been white-skinned.

"Had Rajiv Gandhi married a Nigerian woman and if she was not a white-skinned woman, would the Congress have then accepted her (Sonia's) leadership," he had said recently.
