Yogender Kumar, 40, had lost crops on three of his five bighas of land at Dhantala village in Kharkhoda. He had also taken a loan, which was left to be paid.

He climbed to the top of a telecom tower and stayed there for more than two hours. Villagers who saw him gathered to persuade him to come down. Policemen too arrived at the spot, but the farmer would not budge.
Sources said he had been in depression for a while, after unseasonal rains in March and April flattened standing crops. Around 4 pm, he jumped off, dying instantaneously. The crowd became aggressive and did not allow the authorities to take the body away for a post-mortem, until village elders intervened.

Meerut district magistrate Pankaj Yadav said, "Financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh has been announced for the farmer's kin. A magisterial inquiry has been initiated, under sub-divisional magistrate, Sadar. An FIR will also be lodged against the telecom tower company, as there was not enough fencing around it."
