Major Singh, 45, of Mandi Khurd village in Bathinda district had consumed poison on April 16 and was admitted to a private hospital where he died on Thursday. Bahadur Singh, 55, of Raonta village in Moga, committed suicide on Thursday. Satbir Singh, 40, from Dehra village in Haryana's Panipat district swallowed pesticide and died on Friday.
Major, father of two daughters and a son, had borrowed Rs 5 lakh from a commission agent and had married off his daughter two months ago. His wheat crop in four acres was damaged in the untimely rains in March.
According to sources, he was worried about not being able to repay the loan.
Same is the case with Bahadur, who owed Rs 13 lakh to a bank and commission agents. He was depressed after his crop was damaged and he had failed to repay the loan of Rs 13 lakh. His wife Amarjit Kaur said, "My husband had taken a loan of Rs 5 lakh from a bank while he had borrowed Rs 8 lakh from commission agents. He was under depression for the past few months."
Satbir, father of three daughters and a son, had gone to his fields in the morning and consumed pesticide there. He was found unconscious by some farmers, who informed his family. He was taken to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
Satnarayan, brother of the deceased, said Satbir was under stress as he had been trying unsuccessfully to bring officials to survey crop damage in his 1.5 acre land.
Panipat deputy commissioner Sameer Pal Saron said he would probe the reasons behind the farmer's death.
Farmers' body Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) demanded compensation for the families along with government jobs to one of the kin.
Haryana has witnessed at least a dozen farmers' suicides after the rains destroyed wheat in huge tracts of land.
