Thousands of people wearing red shirts participated in the meeting. Sitaram Yechury, who was elected as the party general secretary earlier in the day, emphasised the need for Left unity and the strategy to be adopted to strengthen the CPM in the country. He dwelt on issues like communalism and neo-liberalism and cautioned the people against their growing influence in the country's politics.
"One can no longer differentiate between neo-liberal forces and communal forces. The BJP is effectively a combo pack signifying and upholding everything that is anti-minority, anti-agrarian and anti-everything that is in public interest." Yechury said. He said that the BJP is still playing to the gallery even after being in power for one full year. It has failed to fulfill its promises made during the elections.
Senior leader Brinda Karat said that communal forces are denying Indian women their right to choose and make choices for themselves. She alleged that the communal forces are displaying the worst kind of attitude one can have towards women. She expressed concern that a woman is sexually assaulted in the country every 16 minutes. K Balakrishna, general secretary, CPM Kerala unit, recalled that the party came into existence in Andhra Pradesh at Tenali. The party's first general secretary was P Sundaraiah.
Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar said the central government is trying to undermine the efforts of the CPM government y trimming down the NREGA funds. He said, "Tripura is the only state in the country which provides employment guarantee of 88 days. This is something that is unpalatable to the central government, which is keen on denying us funds to ensure that we do not deliver on social security projects."
